Metaphysical Poetry

In our second week, we learned what metaphysical poem is. It is all about the love, and the relations between Man and God.  Metaphysical poets care about love by connecting two different things and it’s called “wit”. Yet, the love mentioning in poets is not platonic, it is completely pyhsical.

The most important poet is John Donne about metaphysical poetry and we can say that he is the father of it. “The Flea” is written by him. In this poem, we can see the features of metaphysical poems. In my opinion, it has so interesting meaning. As I read this poem, I was really shocked! And  I said: “How can a human write this kind of poem by conneting the Flea and the love, how can this idea come to someone’s mind?” Thus, it affect me  so highly.

The other poem written by Johne Donne is Holy Sonnet X. It tells the love between God and Man. Actually it is based on death, also there is personification of death. In my opinion, the most effective verses are “One short sleep past, we wake eternally, and Death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.” So, it tells us after we wake eternally, death will die, too.

For me, the least impressive poem is Easter Wings written by George Herbert. But, poem’s shape is quite interesting. It resembles the wings of a bird. There is relation between the shape of stanzas and the meaning. It’s about the region.
